The Essentials

What you need to start a business in Ireland

Here are the key steps most new businesses need to work through. Not all of them will apply to you — book a free call and we'll tell you exactly which ones do.

Step 01

Choose Your Business Structure

The first decision is whether to trade as a sole trader or register a limited company. Each has different tax implications, legal liability, and admin requirements. We'll help you pick the right one.

Step 02

Register Your Company or Business Name

Limited companies are registered with the Companies Registration Office (CRO). Sole traders trading under a name other than their own must register a Business Name. We handle all the paperwork.

Step 03

Register for Income Tax

Every business owner must register with Revenue for income tax. If you're setting up a limited company, the company registers for Corporation Tax. This is done through Revenue's myAccount or ROS portal.

Step 04

Consider VAT Registration

You must register for VAT once your turnover exceeds €37,500 (services) or €75,000 (goods). You can also register voluntarily before those thresholds. We'll advise whether it makes sense for you.

Step 05

Register as an Employer (if hiring)

If you plan to take on staff, you need to register as an employer with Revenue and operate PAYE/PRSI. We can set this up and manage your payroll so you stay compliant from day one.

Step 06

Open a Business Bank Account

A dedicated business bank account keeps your personal and business finances separate — essential for clean bookkeeping and making tax returns straightforward.

Step 07

Set Up Your Bookkeeping

Good records from the start save you time, money, and stress at year end. We provide cloud-based bookkeeping so you always know where you stand financially.

Step 08

File Your Annual Accounts & Returns

Limited companies must file annual accounts with the CRO and a Corporation Tax return with Revenue. Sole traders file an annual self-assessment return. We take care of all of this for you.

Common Questions

Questions from first-time business owners

Should I be a sole trader or set up a limited company?
It depends on your income level, risk appetite, and growth plans. Sole trader registration is simpler and cheaper but you have unlimited personal liability. A limited company offers liability protection and can be more tax efficient once profits exceed roughly €50,000. Book a free call and we will advise you based on your specific situation.
How long does it take to register a company in Ireland?
CRO registration typically takes 3–5 working days for standard applications. We handle the full process — constitution, CRO filing, registered office, and Revenue registration — so you can focus on starting your business.
Do I need to register for VAT straight away?
No. VAT registration is only mandatory once you pass the thresholds (€37,500 for services, €75,000 for goods). However, some businesses register voluntarily from day one to reclaim VAT on startup costs. We will advise which is better for you.
What does a free consultation include?
It is a 30-minute call with one of our advisors. We will discuss your business idea, recommend the right structure, explain the registrations you need, and give you a clear action plan — all at no cost.
How much does it cost to set up a limited company in Ireland?
Our company formation packages start from €299 + VAT, plus the €50 CRO filing fee. This includes full CRO registration, constitution drafting, and tax setup with Revenue.
Can you help me even if I am just exploring the idea of starting a business?
Absolutely. Many of our clients come to us at the very early stages. The free consultation is designed exactly for this — to help you understand your options without any obligation or upfront cost.
